Question 2 answer

I agree most music magazines are vastly appealed to more to the male readership like ‘Q’ Magazine, however there are few music magazines like got instance ‘Top Of the Pops’ are heavily targeted at teen girls (female readership). There are music magazines which tend to appeal both the male and the female readership, for example ‘Kerrang’ Magazine.

Q  Magazine have 67.2% of male readers and 32.8% female readers. From the statistics already, you can see that mainly male readers read ‘Q’ Magazine. The category in which the readers overall fall into is 73% ABC1 and the highest age range percentage is 38.3% readers are aged 15-24. This portrays that mainly Q Magazine have young male readers, furthermore they would read q magazine as the aspects to appeal them are: Black and White/ Dark images in which the facial expression is serious, the cover model are mainly men and if it is a woman, then they would usually show to be sexually attractive – which appeals to male readers. The colours used are stereotypically male colours. There is also a simple font used which has not got ant effects at all. The sell lines are all relates to music in which it also attracts the male audience as they like to read more about the music in general. (eg – top 50 albums).  The Q magazine are more serious about the way genre of the magazine  ‘music’  and tend to focus more on that then in to focus more on the appearance of the artists. This furthermore depicts that the magazine is targeted toward more at men.

Similarly NME is another magazine in which is aimed at more of the male readers. Statistics show that 66% are male and 34% are female readers. The median age is 23, and that 35% of the readers are students. The readership of NME is 289,000 and ABC1 is 61%. It uses similar colours as Q magazine and the whole magazine in general is focused on music.

However another music magazine like Top of the Pops is a magazine which is more strongly aimed at young female readers in general which is 65%. The aspects which make top of the pops aimed at female readers are; the colours used so more girl, bright and loud, pink, yellow and black also white is used a lot throughout the pages of the magazine. The colours are loud and vibrant in which gets the eye of a female reader as they can easily get the attention of something colourful and vibrant. The font is quiet simple however the language used throughout the magazine is informal. The cover model that is usually on the cover is generally smiling or posing and making eye contact with the reader, making the reader feel like they are part of something. It’s usually a range of men and women artists ans teen girls like ‘popular’ music artists. The sell lines are all related to fashion and the latest celebrity news and gossip and nothing about the music, this highlights that top of the pops is mainly an entertainment magazine instead of a music magazine. Freebies are another aspect in which can appeal to the young female readers as they may be interested in the item itself. Freebies include like poster, stickers, make-up, and accessories which are all female related. It also commonly uses abbreviations, in which in reality is used by young females nowadays.
